If you plug your chip into your computer and run 'mount' you should see three or four entries with the very similar names, for example /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdb2, /dev/sdb3, /dev/sdb4 or /dev/mmcblk1, /dev/mmcblk2, /dev/mmcblk3, /dev/mmcblk4. The middle two are the 'system' and 'data' partitions when you boot. Note that your device names may vary.
When one of them is missing, almost always /dev/sdb3 in my case, I run a filesystem check against the partition: fsck /dev/sdb3
The filesystem check rill repair the journal and other things. Eject the microSD card and boot normally.
